We have a gorgeous, if not very naughty, cat called Chapsley. You will see a zillion photos of him on my Instagram feed. He’s technically a moggie, but I’m fairly sure he’s half Bengal. He’s huge, has Bengal like markings and has more energy than is good for him!
We’ve had him for about 18 months now. During the first year, he never really showed much interest in going out, so we kept him in as a house cat. We live near a lot of roads, and I was really worried about him getting hit by a car. Plus he’s so gorgeous I was worried about him getting stolen (which I’m sure he wouldn’t, how many moggies get stolen nowadays?!).
However, as cute as he is, he is also a naughty, aggressive little monkey! For no reason at all, he will just launch himself at me and try and rip the flesh off my legs. To get him off I then put my arms and hands into the mix, which then leaves me looking like I’ve been self harming. Not a good look. I have no idea why he’s so violent sometimes. He never does it to my husband Tom, he’s had the snip, he doesn’t do it when we’re playing. It’s just random. We’ve tried shouting at him, shouting ‘ow!’, ignorning him, spraying him with water (which he loves)… everything. Nothing stops him or prevents him from doing it.
We’ve taken him to the vets twice now. They’ve said there’s nothing physically wrong with him which is good. The general feeling is that he’s just got too much energy, plus he hates being ignored. So if you’re on the phone and ignoring him, then he’ll have a go. If you’re working on your computer, he’ll have a go.
So we decided the best thing was to get a cat flap installed and boot him out all day whilst we’re at work!
The only issue was that all our back doors are full length glass. We were hesitant to cut a hole in the glass pane, as we’ve heard a lot of horror stories about it not being done right, and condensation ending up inside etc.
So in the end we hired a glazer to create a new glass panel for us, with the hole already cut in. He then took the original one out, and replaced it with this new one. We now have the original one we can use as a back up in case we break it, or want to get rid of it etc.
The glazer was really good – we found him on Checkatrade. It took him a couple of hours to install it all – cat flap included.
We got a SureFlap cat flap. This works with Chapsley’s chip, so only he can come and go through it. And he doesn’t need to wear a collar, which is good because when we did put on on him, he tried to chew it off and ended up getting his lower teeth stuck in in, so was locked with his jaw open, teeth caught.. it was all rather dramatic for the poor thing!. It’s battery operated, so no messy plugs which is also good.
It took him a while to get used to using it. I’ll post a video of him trying to get through it shortly. It is the most hilarious thing you’ll ever see!!
