So I spent most of this week looking to my left. I woke up on Monday and couldn’t move my head. It got to the point where I couldn’t really move at all, because every movement your body makes pretty much affects your neck.
I woke up after a painful nights sleep, realising that I couldn’t really move my neck or head, so was lying on my back, looking at the top left-hand corner of our bedroom. After half an hour or so I gave my husband a nudge and informed him of my predicament.
We did a quick bit of Googling and quickly established that I had a case of acute torticollis. This is when you randomly wake up and find that your head is twisted to one side and is pretty much stuck there. Great.
Wikipedia describes it as:
Torticollis, also known as wry neck or loxia, is a symptom defined by an abnormal, asymmetrical head or neck position, which may be due to a variety of causes. The term torticollis is derived from the Latin words tortus for twisted and collum for neck.
Oh, but it gets better. If you move your head, or arm or anything that interferes with your neck, then you get the most wonderful neck spasms. It’s like cramp in your neck. Just lovely. So, so, so painful.
So Monday was spent in bed, lying on my back feeling rather miserable and quite worried about how I’d manage to get up to go to the loo (managed it, but.it.was.not.fun). Then Tuesday I managed to get out of bed, which was great, but was still stuck looking to the left. Then Wednesday came round and I was able to get a lot of the movement back which was good. Thursday swung by and most of my movement was back, but my whole head, neck, shoulders and back just ached so bad. It was so painful all day long.
Then Friday came round and I had no choice but to go to work as I was holding an all day workshop – can’t hold a workshop for a load of senior bods if you’re not there! So I managed to get through that okay.
I’m not sure what caused it – sleeping awkwardly I imagine. So there’s no real way to prevent it from happening again, which is a bit worrying. At least if it does happen again then I’ll know what to expect.
So it wasn’t such a fun week for me. Oh yeah, and I almost forgot to mention I’m now wonky. My right shoulder has dropped about an inch lower than my left. Not sure why… but I’m rather hoping it sorts itself out naturally soon!
